I just read
Wrapped Around Your Finger by Jade_Orchid and I rather liked it. Review with spoilers follows. Also contains thoughts (with spoilers) on some of Isaac Asimov's works.
Now, obviously, I'm partial to the theme and find it inherently believable. Nevertheless I don't think my judgment is too impaired when I say that this started as a fairly convincing extrapolation from canon with a post-war emotionally scarred Hermione. Killing off people's parents is certainly a time-honored way of darkening their character.
But the conclusion of the story managed to touch two of my pet peeves at once, let's take them in order.
1. Endings where we find out that Things Were Not As They Seemed. Now, when done well this can of course be excellent - but it's hard to do well. It tends to be far-fetched. It tends to be what people do when they want "more plot" in the story and it usually doesn't work for me. I'll take convincing characterization and character development over "intriguing" plot any day.
2. Mind control explanations. Finding out that someone's emotions/opinions/thoughts were, contrary to what the authorial voice suggested at the time, being directly manipulated by magical or technological means. I can't stand that. It drives a dagger into the back of my "believable characters" fanaticism. This is, in my opinion, what stopped Isaac Asimov's
The Robots of Dawn from being an excellent work. At the end of the story we find out that mind-controlling robots, secretly manipulating the future of the human race, are responsible for a good part of the book's plot. :) Asimov also managed to spoil his
Foundation's Edge with this sort of thing. Come to think of it that book also had a hefty dosage of Things Were Not As They Seemed. And it wasn't done well, in my opinion. And if Asimov couldn't always pull it off I'm skeptical of mere mortals trying it :)
That said, as you might have gathered, I'm a big fan of Asimov's works despite all their faults. In the same spirit I really liked Jade_Orchid's story - even if I didn't fancy the ending. :)
